Overview
LG Electronics recognized the growing need for advanced safety technology to prevent accidents and improve driver behavior on its long-distance commuter bus routes. With high accident risks caused by drowsy driving, distraction, and momentary lapses in attention, a solution capable of real-time detection and alerts became essential.
To address this, LG collaborated with the Korea Transportation Safety Authority and adopted A.I.Matics’ Vision AI–based driver monitoring solution. The system was designed to detect risky behaviors, improve driving habits, and establish a proactive response framework for accident prevention.
Solution
LG Electronics recognized the growing need for advanced safety technology to prevent accidents and improve driver behavior on its long-distance commuter bus routes. With high accident risks caused by drowsy driving, distraction, and momentary lapses in attention, a solution capable of real-time detection and alerts became essential.
To address this, LG collaborated with the Korea Transportation Safety Authority and adopted A.I.Matics’ Vision AI–based driver monitoring solution. The system was designed to detect risky behaviors, improve driving habits, and establish a proactive response framework for accident prevention.
Between September and November, LG Electronics deployed A.I.Matics’ AI safety solution across 14 commuter buses operating between Changwon and Busan.
The solution offered the following capabilities:
Real-time detection & alerts for risky driving behaviors (drowsiness, distraction, phone use, smoking, seatbelt neglect, etc.)
AI-powered monitoring of driving conditions (lane departure, close following distance, harsh braking, etc.)
Live alerts & data sharing with fleet managers during incidents
Comprehensive driving reports generated from AI data
Each bus was equipped with A.I.Matics Roadscope-9, featuring five AI cameras (front, rear, sides, and cabin). This enabled continuous monitoring of both external traffic conditions and in-cabin driver behavior, allowing immediate response when unsafe situations occurred.
Results
The pilot program demonstrated significant improvements in road safety for LG Electronics:
Safety score improved by 70% (from 48.4 to 82.3)
Major reduction in risky driving behaviors
Harsh braking: ↓80.3%
Lane departure: ↓64.2%
Close following distance: ↓56.7%
Smoking while driving: ↓46.3%
Mobile phone use: ↓44.4%
Drowsy driving reduced to zero incidents during the trial period
Bus idle time decreased by 43%, contributing to operational efficiency
Building on these results, LG Electronics plans to expand the solution across all employee shuttle buses nationwide in 2024, creating a safer commuting environment and reducing accident risks.
The Korea Transportation Safety Authority also announced its intent to leverage this project as a model for expanding AI-based monitoring solutions across public transport, private operators, and local government fleets.
